Favourite Poem
Hi Terry, Guy and anyone else who is interested.

My favourite poems change all the time, although there are a few that I tend to go back to. One these is Altarwise by Owl-Light by Dylan Thomas, mainly for the strange imagery and and the sounds of the words. It starts:

Altarwise by owl-light in the half-way house
The gentleman lay graveward with his furies;
Abaddon in the hangnail cracked from Adam,
And, from his fork, a dog among the fairies,

The rest can be found here:

I'd be interested to hear anyone else's favorite poem (or if there is a poet who inspires you).

Hi everyone.
Like Twilark, my favorite poem changes all the time, but recently I've been returning to Mad Girl's Love Song by Plath:

Mad Girl's Love Song - Sylvia Plath

I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead;
I lift my lids and all is born again.
(I think I made you up inside my head.)

The rest can be found here:

I'm a big fan of this, because it's in such a restrictive form (Vilanelle) and creating a meaningful, well written piece of poetry within it is hard. Dylan Thomas' Do not go gentle into that good night, is another good Vilanelle.

Your mention of Vilanelle brings to mind The House on the Hill by Edward Arlington Robinson. I think the repetition of the refrains in the poem "They are all gone away" and "There is nothing more to say" accentuates the bleakness and emptiness in a haunting sort of way.
