Fantasy and Science Fiction writing resources I thought it might be useful to create an area to bring together some of the free online resources for writing Science Fiction and Fantasy:
A Checklist for Critiquing Science Fiction:
http://www.sfwa.org/2009/06/a-checklist-for-critiquing-science-fiction/
Turkey City Lexicon is a glossary of common sf & fantasy writing mistakes produced at the Turkey City Writer's Workshop. These workshops are professional science fiction writer's workshops, modelled after the Milford Writers Workshops, and have included writers like Paul Di Filippo, Cory Doctorow, Jeff VanderMeer, Bruce Sterling, George R. R. Martin etc...
Examples from the Lexicon:
“Call a Rabbit a Smeerp“
A cheap technique for false exoticism, in which common elements of the real world are re-named for a fantastic milieu without any real alteration in their basic nature or behavior. “Smeerps” are especially common in fantasy worlds, where people often ride exotic steeds that look and act just like horses. (Attributed to James Blish.)
Roget’s Disease
The ludicrous overuse of far-fetched adjectives, piled into a festering, fungal, tenebrous, troglodytic, ichorous, leprous, synonymic heap. (Attr. John W. Campbell)
Although there are many examples of good writers sucessfully pulling-off techniques that are included in the lexicon as mistakes, it's still an invaluable
Finally, science fiction writer Chalie Stross is writing a series of blog posts about Common Misconceptions About Publishing. Although these aren't specifically about the craft of writing, they may be of interest. The first can be found here:
